What is Paediatric ENT?

Paediatric ENT is the medical specialty that looks after ear nose and throat problems in children. Here at My ENT Specialist we are very experienced in the management of paediatric ENT problems.

Some of the problems we see in paediatric ENT include:

  • Adenoid and Tonsil Problems
  • Snoring and Sleep Apnoea
  • Otitis Media, Glue Ear and Grommets
  • Paediatric Airway Problems (these are by no means common but they are extremely important)
  • Paediatric Neck Lumps (again, not common but very important)

Pediatric ENT Conditions and Treatments

Tonsils & Adenoid Problems

The adenoids are located at the back of the nose and are comprised of lymphoid tissue. In childhood they are part of the immune system that fights infections.

Middle Ear Infections

This bacterial infection of the middle ear is very common in childhood. Few children will escape an episode. Bacteria can reach the middle ear space via its normal drainage tube.

Glue Ear

Glue ear or otitis media with effusion (OME) is an extremely common problem in children. It is estimated that it will affect around 4 out of 5 children before their 4th birthday.

Grommets

Grommets or “Ventilation Tubes” are tiny hollow tubes inserted into the ear
drum. They allow air back into the middle ear, allowing the eardrum to
vibrate.

Airway Problems

Unlike an adult’s airway which is at its narrowest at the level of the vocal cords, a child’s airway is narrowest in the area below the voice box.
